The best way to Take Advantage of Older Lighter Regulations When Coaching Youth Basketball

On its face, typically, the older lighter rule brands a lot of sense; if a person is tiny and may battle with playing in his population, let him play “down” an age group, so he has time to play and compete. I believe if you have a tiny initial year 11-year-old person that weighs 70 kilos, this rule will allow him or her to play with nine and 10-year-olds and provide the player the chance to understand the game and get meaningful playtime to build a love for your game in him. Age is a significant factor in youth football. The group commissioner for Omaha’s Heartland Youth Football League did an in-depth study of the ages of the teams within our league in 2001. Age group is essential, but so may be the birthdate date. Within 2003 I had an “Unlimited” age 8-10 team, with four players who turned 11 in August. That was a massive advantage for all of us.

Now just imagine if you had the lighter 11-year-old, which had a birthdate associated with August 3rd, and now you possess a 12-year-old playing eight-year-olds. That would be much more dangerous for some eight-year-olds if the 12-year-old player experienced four years of football performance under his belt.

My teams play in limitless leagues with “running back” weights. The big kids have to play between the tackles and are not allowed to carry or capture the football. We have usually found it is not the big weighty linemen dominating game titles and making big gets; it is that medium-sized or maybe smaller kid who has rate, aggressiveness, and acceleration by way of contact. While the big linemen may seem a bit imposing on the outside, once the game is underneath way, the players that are anticipated most are the big hitters, that are rarely if ever, the big children. Hence it could be that aggressive, more minor, older-but-lighter player that could be the actual terror of your league, not really that “Fat Freddie” large linemen.

What often occurs in the youth football crews with “older-but-lighter” rules may be the rule getting abused. Rather than using the rule designed to aid the development of genuinely smaller-sized and weaker players, groups load their team’s plan with perfectly well-adjusted and skilled smaller players. Some groups even make these currently skinny lighter players Slim down to ensure they meet the bodyweight guidelines if the player is close to the weight limit.

We have had youth football instructors e-mail me to say these people play teams all day, and kids where 17 are generally older but lighter. If you closely browse through the ages of many of the top-rated Pop Warner teams which play on TV for Countrywide Titles, quite often you find squads stacked full of very extra tall and skinny older-but-lighter people.

I’m unsure how to answer the “stacking” of older-but-lighter kids on teams to make competitive advantages. I like thinking about significantly smaller first-season players playing down an age group to give them time to develop. However, if the fat differentials are not large enough or maybe already small players are pressured into losing weight to meet older-but-lighter requirements, I’m unclear if we are meeting the objective of the rule.

In our Omaha Youth Football league, using August 1st cutoff appointments, we often had 8th graders with August or October birthdates playing about the 11-12-year-old team. The condition was many of their 9th-grade buddies were participating in the 13-14 age staff. While it would have given us all a significant advantage to keep you on the younger team, in case the players were mature, plenty of us would play them program their friends.
